All Abilities Aussie Rules Football Activity

Overview

Reclink Football is an All Abilities Aussie Rules League for adult participants of all ages, abilities, genders and backgrounds utilising a modified set of rules and a evident culture of inclusion and participation.

Reclink Australia is a national not-for-profit that provides more than 100,000 sport and recreation opportunities annually to disadvantaged Australians. The genesis of the Reclink organisation was a humble kick to kick on the streets of St Kilda as a means of pro-active welfare outreach. From these humble beginnings 30 years ago to becoming a highlight event on the community sport calendar, Reclink's Aussie Rules League is a bedrock program with a colourful history and hugely diverse player and contributor base.
Reclink footy is a genuine All Abilities League that has evolved over its many years to accommodate the needs of players of all ages, abilities, genders and backgrounds. Reclink footy matches have been played everywhere from remote indigenous communities to landmark AFL venues to prisons. Reclink strives to remove barriers to participation through adaptability of format and the fostering of an inclusive culture.
Unlike other leagues which specifically work within the disability space, Reclink footy provides an environment where a first-time player with special needs can run onto the ground next to a former AFL footballer and feel an equal sense of belonging.
Reclink footy has developed a set of modified rules utilising high visibility vests for special needs and female players. Our amazing “vest players” can not be contacted by another player and are awarded the ball by touching with both hands.
Beyond the written rules it’s the way in which the game is played that makes Reclink unique.
The Spirit of Reclink is an enduring feature of any Reclink game. It’s the understanding and demonstration of everyone’s right to dignity and respect regardless of role or ability.
All Reclink matches commence with a pre-game address that sets a tone of fair-play and sportsmanship. The modified rules are reiterated and both teams shake hands (and often hugs !)
Scores are kept but often forgotten as all teams finish their season by playing in the Grand Final Series held over three festive days in St Kilda.
In addition to matches, which are held every fortnight , Reclink hosts a number of footy events including Development Days with AFL figures, indoor footy , coaching courses and our annual VRGF “Love the Game Round” bringing together all 17 teams for a massive round robin.
The Reclink footy season is formally concluded at the Peter Cullen Medal Ceremony which recognises the contribution of players and volunteers at a Brownlow style lunch function.
The Reclink footy team welcomes enquiries from individuals, carers, service providers and other community groups.
